Best Day to Start a New Habit (+ 2027 Fresh Start Calendar)

The best day to start a new habit is a Monday, best of all one that opens a month. The research on fresh starts, and every fresh start date in 2027.

Two printed sheets clipped to a light wall with gold binder clips: on the left a 2027 year calendar titled '2027, day one.' with fresh start dates circled, on the right a page titled 'My fresh starts.' with lines for personal landmarks, the habit and week one.

The best day to start a new habit is a Monday, and the best Mondays also open a month, a season or a year. In a study of 11,912 gym members, visits were 33% more likely at the start of a week. In 2027, three Mondays fall on the first of a month: February 1, March 1 and November 1. The full 2027 list is below.

“I’ll start on Monday” sounds like an excuse. It turns out to be a strategy. People start new goals far more often right after a landmark in time, and the effect is big enough to plan around. This guide covers what the research found, which days work best, every fresh start date in 2027, and how to use one so the habit outlasts the first week.

The fresh start effect, in numbers

In 2014, Hengchen Dai, Katherine Milkman and Jason Riis looked at three kinds of real-world data: Google searches for “diet”, daily gym check-ins of 11,912 undergraduates at a university fitness center over 442 days, and 66,062 commitment contracts that 43,012 people made on the goal-setting site stickK. All three rose after what the researchers call temporal landmarks: the start of a new week, month or year, a new semester, a birthday, a holiday. They named it the fresh start effect.

LandmarkSearches for “diet”Gym visitsNew goal commitments
Start of a week+14.4%+33.4%+62.9%
Start of a month+3.7%+14.4%+23.6%
Start of a year+82.1%+11.6%+145.3%
Start of a semester+47.1%
After a school break+24.3%
After a federal holiday+10.2%+55.1%
After a birthday+7.5%+2.6%

Increases are relative to the baseline in each data set; empty cells are landmarks a study didn’t measure. One footnote is too good to skip: gym visits rose after birthdays except the 21st, when they fell.

Why a date feels like a fresh start

In a follow-up, the same researchers offered 165 people a goal reminder on one of several dates. For half of them, March 20, 2014 was labelled “The First Day of Spring 2014”; for the other half, “The Third Thursday in March 2014”. Same day, different name. With the new-beginning label, 25.6% chose a reminder on March 20; with the ordinary label, 7.2%.

Their explanation across five experiments: landmarks draw a line between you and your past self, with all its failed attempts. “That was the old me” is easier to say on the first of the month than on a random Wednesday. Which means you can help a date feel like a beginning just by how you name it: “day one”, “week one”, “the first day of spring”.

So which day is best?

  1. Any Monday. The week effect showed up in all three studies, and you get 52 of them a year. If you’re reading this mid-week, your next fresh start is at most six days away.
  2. A Monday that is also the first of the month. Two landmarks on one day. In 2027 that’s February 1, March 1 and November 1.
  3. The first Monday of the year. January 1, 2027 is a Friday, so the first full week starts on Monday, January 4. The year effect was the biggest for goal commitments (+145%), but January is also when everyone starts at once, and when the gyms are fullest.
  4. The first workday after a holiday. Goal commitments rose 55% after federal holidays. In 2027 most of these are Tuesdays, because the holidays fall on Mondays.
  5. Your own landmarks. A birthday, a new job, a move, the first day of term. The semester start was the strongest gym effect of all (+47%).

Monday or Sunday?

In the US, most calendars start the week on Sunday, so it’s fair to ask whether Sunday is the real fresh start. The data point to Monday. Dai, Milkman and Riis counted the week from Monday to Sunday, and all three of their data sets were American. A separate study of US Google searches by John Ayers and colleagues found that searches containing “healthy” peaked on Monday and Tuesday, about 30% above the average for Wednesday through Sunday, with only a modest rebound on Sunday. A rhythm that works with both: plan on Sunday evening, start on Monday morning.

One caution. A fresh start helps you begin; it doesn’t carry you through. In the best-known study of real-world habits, automaticity took a median of 66 days, with a very wide range (how long it takes to form a habit has the details). So use the landmark to start, and plan the next eight weeks as if motivation will run out, because it will.

How to use a fresh start

  1. Pick the date now, not on the day. Choose your landmark from the calendar above and write it down with the habit: “On Monday, February 1, I start running.”
  2. Name it. Call it day one, or week one of February, or the first day of spring. The spring experiment suggests the label does real work.
  3. Make week one almost too easy. Two kilometres, slowly. One page, not a chapter. The first week is about showing up on the days you planned, not about the result.
  4. Tie it to a cue, not a reminder. “After my coffee, I put on my running shoes.” A habit attached to something you already do becomes automatic faster than one triggered by a notification; morning routine ideas work the same way.
  5. Decide your restart date in advance. You’ll miss a day. When you do, the next Monday is your next fresh start: restart there instead of trying to catch up, and instead of waiting for next January.
  6. Review week one. On the Sunday, write two lines: what made it easy, what got in the way. A short weekly review keeps the habit moving after the landmark’s push fades.

If the habit belongs to a bigger goal, plan it in cycles: the 12 Week Year gives you a fresh start every quarter, and how to set goals covers writing the goal itself.

Fresh starts in Plannedo

You can set up a fresh start before it arrives. Add the habit now and set its Start date to your landmark: it appears on Today from that day, starting its streak. Put the first small steps of week one on their days, and link them to the goal they serve so each one shows up as progress.

Plannedo on iPhone showing Monday, January 4, 2027: the tasks 'Day one: 2 km, as slowly as I like' at 07:30, linked to the goal Run 5 km without stopping, and 'Put the book on the pillow', then the habits 'Run, 20 minutes' and 'Read 10 pages before bed', both marked Start streak today, and Log the day.Plannedo on iPhone showing Monday, January 4, 2027: the tasks 'Day one: 2 km, as slowly as I like' at 07:30, linked to the goal Run 5 km without stopping, and 'Put the book on the pillow', then the habits 'Run, 20 minutes' and 'Read 10 pages before bed', both marked Start streak today, and Log the day.
Monday, January 4, 2027, set up in October: two habits start their streaks, and day one is a single small run.

In Week, the whole first week is on one screen: small runs on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, a rest day, and the Sunday review.

Week one, planned before New Year: small enough to do on a bad day.

FAQ

What is the best day to start a new habit?

A Monday, especially one that also starts a new month, season or year. In research on gym attendance, visits were 33% more likely at the start of a week, and goal commitments on the site stickK were 63% more likely. In 2027, February 1, March 1 and November 1 are Mondays that also start a month.

Should I start a new habit on Sunday or Monday?

Monday. Even in the US, where calendars usually start on Sunday, the research found the start-of-week boost on Monday, and US searches for “healthy” peak on Monday and Tuesday. Use Sunday evening to plan the week and Monday to begin.

Is Monday really the best day to start?

For most people, yes. The start-of-week effect appeared in searches for dieting, gym visits and goal commitments alike, and Monday comes every week, so you never have to wait long. If your week starts on another day, use that day: what matters is that it feels like the beginning of a new period.

What is the fresh start effect?

It’s the finding that people are more likely to start working on goals right after temporal landmarks, such as a new week, month or year, a birthday or a holiday. Hengchen Dai, Katherine Milkman and Jason Riis described it in 2014. Their explanation is that landmarks separate us from our past, imperfect self, which makes a new attempt feel like a clean start.

Should I wait until January 1 to start a new habit?

No. January 1 is the strongest landmark for making commitments, but every Monday and every first of the month work too, and starting sooner gives you more weeks of practice. If you do want a January start, in 2027 the first full week begins on Monday, January 4.

What are the fresh start dates in 2027?

Every Monday, plus: January 1 and 4, February 1 (a Monday and a new month), February 6 (Lunar New Year), March 1 (a Monday and a new month), March 20 (first day of spring), the first of every month, June 21 (first day of summer), September 23 (first day of autumn), November 1 (a Monday and a new month), December 21 (first day of winter), and the first workday after each US federal holiday.

What if I miss my start date or break the habit?

Restart on the next Monday rather than waiting for a bigger landmark, and don’t try to make up the missed days. A fresh start works because it lets you leave the slip behind; a new week is enough of a line to draw.
